The Environmental Protection Division (EPD), in coordination with GEMA/HS, are aware and monitoring the incident to the chemical plant fire in Rockdale County. EPD, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other partners are on the ground assessing the situation. EPD leadership is present at the State Operations Center and working to ensure safety and contain any potential hazards.

You may notice a chlorine odor in the air. Data suggests that the levels of the chemicals in the air are unlikely to cause harm to most people. Monitoring is still ongoing.

Chemicals released from the recent fire include chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine compounds. These compounds may cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes, including the eyes, nasal passages, and respiratory system. Individuals with preexisting conditions affecting these areas may be more susceptible to developing symptoms from exposure.

Recommendations include limiting exposure to these compounds by

  • Staying indoors with closed windows and doors.
  • Turn off the HVAC that may pull in outdoor air.
  • HVAC systems that are known only to recirculate indoor air can be left on in recirculating mode.

N95 masks are likely to provide only limited benefit, if any, due to the chlorine compounds being smaller than the size filtered by an N95 mask.

The levels of the chemicals reported to date are below the levels previously recognized to cause symptoms in most people. Some people may develop symptoms even at these levels.
