School Safety Training
Training on school safety issues is provided through a series of statewide conferences, regional workshops and presentations provided at the request of local communities. For more information on our school safety programs, email [email protected].
A local agency or school may request any of the following programs:
Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) Overview
This class is designed to give participants an overall view of the behavioral threat assessment process and an overview of the full length BTAM course, as well as next steps for team support and creation. The goal is to empower everyone with the tools and knowledge to allow you to keep yourself safe.
Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) Training
In this course, we will investigate why & how violence prevention is possible, discuss the elements of an effective threat assessment & management program, and practice skills to identify, assess and manage cases involving potential threats. This class is six (6) hours.
Bomb Threat Management
This course examines how to develop a Bomb Threat Management Plan to handle the many types of threats that may occur. This class discusses the types of threats, how and when to evacuate, as well as how to conduct searches for suspicious packages.
Bus Safety Awareness
This course identifies laws associated with school buses, special considerations for school buses, and additional safety factors that may need to be considered when developing a school safety plan. It also discusses several incidents that bus drivers may be faced with and identifying potential problems with the use of school buses in exigent circumstances.
Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE)
Incidents involving active shooters have become all too familiar. Through this training we will identify a true active shooter, examine the history of active shooter incidents and discuss the possible responses to various active shooter situations. We will also explore pro-active steps that can be taken to possibly reduce the likelihood of an incident occurring.
De-escalation for Schools
This course discusses violence in schools, human behavior, and human interaction. This class is designed to give helpful tips in many situations when de-escalation is necessary. Our goal is to provide training that will make your school a safer place to learn and work.
Emergency Operations Planning for Schools
This program examines the planning process and what aspects should be covered in the Emergency Operations Plan according to the law. This class also discusses self-assessment tips for reviewing a schools plan.
School Safety Assessment
The purpose of the site assessment is to conduct a basic multi discipline evaluation of the site to gauge existing or potential hazards, conditions or practices that may impact the safety and wellbeing of the property and those that are present. The site assessment takes an all-hazard approach and is based on CPTED principles, best practices, and local response protocols. Assessments are non-regulatory.
Severe Weather
This course examines the weather-related dangers that pose specific risks to schools. This program also discusses the types of watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service, proper response procedures, and proper safe-sheltering areas within the school facility.
Site Threat Access & Response (STAR) Audit
This program helps schools identify vulnerabilities at their facilities and improve their level of safety. The STAR Audit is designed to give requesting entities a fair and unbiased evaluation of physical security measures and threat response protocols.
Stop the Bleed
Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. This course is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.
Suspicious Activity Reporting
Recent events highlight the need to have an easy, consistent method of reporting suspicious activity. This course is designed to give participants a greater understanding of what suspicious activity is and how to properly report it. They will be taught that suspicious activity focuses on behaviors and incidents, not on race, ethnicity, national origin, or religious affiliation. Situational awareness will be emphasized.
Violent Extremism: An Introduction
This course will explore the causes of targeted violence, the radicalization process, the bystander effect, and what people can do to prevent targeted violence.
Visual Weapons Screening
This course discusses concealment techniques and the indicators that a person may be carrying a weapon. It also discusses different screening techniques, how to apply those techniques, and what procedures should be followed if a weapon is suspected. Laws concerning weapons in school are also examined in this course.
What Can GEMA/HS Do For You?
This one-hour block of instruction delivers an overview of services provided by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS). GEMA/HS coordinates the state’s preparedness, response, and recovery efforts to disasters, and works with local, state, and federal governments, in partnership with the private sector and faith-based community, to prevent and respond to natural and man-made emergencies. This course focuses on school safety training and technical assistance provided by GEMA/HS Homeland Security Coordinators to the education, emergency management and public safety communities of Georgia.
