Office of Homeland Security-Georgia Emergency Management Agency (OHS-GEMA)OHS-GEMA's Mission"OHS-GEMA's mission is to provide a comprehensive and aggressive all-hazards approach to homeland security initiatives, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery and special events." The purpose of our mission is to protect life and property and to prevent and/or reduce the negative impact of natural and man-made events in Georgia. Providing essential government services, particularly in the area of public safety and homeland security, is an immense challenge. Not only are we faced with natural threats, but the specter of terrorism has created new demands. At the same time, economic constraints require better and more resourceful management on our part. OHS-GEMA's values set the stage for an aggressive, proactive and innovative approach, which have earned the agency a distinguished reputation for successfully serving Georgia's citizens in the face of nearly two dozen disasters and incidents. Every disaster has a human side -- the victims, as well as the responders and volunteers who reach out and lend a helping hand when emergencies occur. With this in mind, our mission is clear. Our efforts in the areas of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery are carried out with the clear understanding that when all is said and done -- it is truly all about people. By working together with our partners in government and the volunteer and private sector, we can successfully confront whatever challenges come our way. Major General William T. Nesbitt is Georgia's director of Homeland Security and Charley English is director of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).
